Press Brake Technician

Take us through a typical day at Bailey for you…

My job is to develop metal sheets (could be aluminium, copper, stainless steel etc.), working from drawings and transforming the sheets into recognisable profiles.
Different projects have different needs, some jobs are more complicated than others. There are those require welding elements and others that don’t.
For each project we plan the sequence of work, so if welding is required, the guys are aware of when, what and how. The preparation is normally on a weekly basis but can be daily, it will always come down to the quantity of panels needed.

What’s your favourite thing about working for Bailey?

I am encouraged and given the freedom to self- manage and I am proud that I play an active role creating profiles that our customers are proud of

What’s the most challenging aspect of your job and how do you overcome it?

There are many tasks when manufacturing panels that if not done properly and in the right order, will waste a lot of valuable time.
It is important to prioritise the sequence work, otherwise the process becomes time consuming, especially on the bigger projects.
I work in a team and it really helps to discuss each job, knowing who has to do what and when. It really helps make us more efficient.

What advice would you give to someone who would like to work as a Press Brake Technician?

You’ve got to have good concentration, an ability not to be distracted and have the confidence to work out of your comfort zone, as you will learn more.

What three words would you use to describe the company?

1. Ambitious
2. Creative
3. Committed

Do you have any nickname? What is it?

None but maybe people are afraid to say it to my face.

If you had to eat one meal, every day for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Steak, medium rare, with egg, spinach and soya sauce. A bit different, sounds strange, I promise it does work and my missus makes it so who am I to argue!

If you were stuck on an island what three things would you bring?

1. MP3 player – I might be young but I love classic rock, particularly groups like the Beatles, Kinks, Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Oasis (even these guys are bit old)
2. Punch bag – I am more than happy to work out every day
3. Guitar – I play a lot of open mike gigs around my local town.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I like going to gigs, listening to and playing music

What is on your bucket list?

Go to space! Ever since I was a youngster watching Sci-fi moves this has been my ambition.
Otherwise I would like to travel the world, if space is a distant horizon.

If you were given a choice, where in the world would you like to go?

I’ve been to Vietnam before and would like to go again. On the same trip, I would like to explore other countries in the far east, including places such as Cambodia.
