Wythenshawe Transport Interchange

Sector: Transport
Architect: AHR
Client: Manchester City Council

At times, travelling can be a stressful affair, which is why it is important to provide pleasant facilities at stations. With this in mind, transit hubs are increasingly being built to serve as desirable places to encourage the use of public transport.

As such, Manchester City Council decided to invest in Wythenshawe Transport Interchange as part of the city’s wider regeneration plans, which boasts a stunning Bailey Secret Fix Cassette Eaves system. The £6 million project was recently completed, providing customers with a high quality gateway to the town centre with improved safety and security for the public.

Architects at AHR designed the building, specifying Bailey’s Secret Fix Eaves to help define the passenger entrances and draw people into the building, creating a welcoming sight for weary travellers. The eaves contribute to the sweeping form, creating a smooth, seamless finish, ensuring the interchange is easy to navigate.

Bailey has worked closely with AHR on previous transport projects, explained associate director, Robin Dixon: “We tend to use Bailey on all our transport projects as they are very good at interpreting the complexity of these type of designs. We were very happy with the finished result on the Wythenshawe project – Bailey’s eaves add an important visual interface at the head of the elevation.”

Sub-contractors for the project, Curtis Moore, fitted the Bailey system. Commercial director, Euan Walker said: “Due to the building’s design, the eaves had to curve in two dimensions and be fixed to a complex frame. Thanks to Bailey’s tailored manufacturing approach, with the detailed instructions and drawings provided, the installation ran smoothly, leaving no room for error. ”

For passengers, the new interchange offers a range of improved services, such as modern, full-covered waiting areas, better information and ticketing facilities, a safer, more secure waiting environment and greater accessibility.
