The Safe2Torch campaign is an initiative being run by the NFRC to promote safe specifications and safer working practices where hot works such as gas-torches are used to apply waterproofing systems. Safe2Torch systems provide flame-free zones of a minimum of 900mm width around perimeters, details and areas where combustible materials are present. This flame-free zone is designed into the overall waterproofing system to limit the hazards of fire as much as is practically possible.
It is the responsibility of the entire industry to do what we can to minimise the risks and as a manufacturer of high-performance roofing membranes, Bailey are on hand to help.
A large part of this campaign is identifying where gas-torch applied products can and cannot be used. The areas where the Safe2Torch guidance states that these products cannot be used can be seen below.
Adjoining a pitched roof
Abutments with open cavities or open perpends
Fixed timber, plastic fascia or soffits
The Safe2Torch guidance also suggests areas (on or near) where torch-free alternatives need to be considered:
Rooflight Kerbs and Upstands
Bailey offer technical specification support and site surveys to architects, clients and all specifiers to ensure the hazards are minimised at the design stage to aid in the safe installation of waterproofing systems in the vicinity of any combustible materials.
Bailey Safe-To-Torch System – with Safe2Torch Zones (900mm from all perimeters and details)
Bailey Alpha-Bar SA Vapour Barrier
To all areas. This is a high-quality self-adhesive bitumen vapour barrier ideally suited to all deck types. It requires a self-adhesive primer to be applied to the deck first.
Single layer SBS modified bitumen capsheet with mineral finish, 5kg/m², adhered to the underlay with PU adhesive in the field area and contact adhesive to all details. Lap joints and detailing hot air welded with heat guns.
Bailey flame-free application alternative to torch-on products
Whilst torch-on systems are quick to lay and are very reliable, on projects where combustible details present a substantial fire-risk, the safest option is to use a fully flame-free system. Bailey offer a variety of products for completely flame free situations.

Bailey Alpha-Bar SA Vapour Barrier
This is a bitumen vapour barrier ideally suited to all deck types. It requires a self-adhesive primer to be applied to the deck first.
This is an aluminium backed reinforced self-adhesive vapour barrier which is a good budget option if costs are a concern. It also requires a self-adhesive primer applied to the deck first. Suitable for metal and timber decks.
This is a 1000 gauge polythene vapour barrier for mechanically fixed applications. Suitable for use on metal and timber decks.
Bailey Classic USA
This is a 1.8mm bitumen self-adhesive underlay suitable for application with Bailey Classic Capsheets to insulation as well as timber and metal decks. It also eliminates the need for a venting layer that a traditional torch-on bitumen would require.
This is a 5kg/m² SBS modified bitumen mineral coated capsheet. It comes in either a fleece-backed version for adhered applications or a PE film backed version for mechanically fixed applications. It is a single layer system with the lap joints being welded with hot air guns, completely eliminating the need for naked flames.
This is a TPE thermoplastic single ply waterproofing system. It comes in either a fleece-backed version for adhered applications or a PE film backed version for mechanically fixed applications. It is a single layer system with the lap joints being welded with hot air guns, completely eliminating the need for naked flames.
Bailey Sure-Coat QC
This is a cold-applied Polyurea liquid plastic system. Applied at a rate of 2kg/m² and including glass-fibre reinforcement layer, this product is applied with brushes or rollers making it ideal for tricky details often found in zones designated as not Safe2Torch.
